Do you know what Adverse Childhood Experiences are? Would you know how to help someone who has faced childhood trauma before? Are you that 'someone' and you find yourself needing help? Perhaps you recognise that your own child(ren) is going through it now?
Hi. We're Swale Space Champions.
We are a group dedicated to raising awareness and educating the local community about the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences.
We are here to help.
Whether that be through developing your knowledge as a professional, or by being that familiar person you need to talk to if you're experiencing the impact of childhood adversity.
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are defined as highly stressful events or situations that occur during childhood and/or adolescence, whether it be a single event or multiple incidents that happen over a prolonged time. This can include; neglect, violence and coercion, inhuman treatment, household adversity such as substance misuse, adjustment, taking on adult responsibilities, bereavement, and prejudice.
Children who experience adversity and trauma will live their lives with the physical, emotional and health consequences of trauma such as depression and anxiety, intrusive memories, hyperarousal, disassociation and avoidance.
Early intervention through trauma informed practice can help to mitigate these risks.
